FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first visit.
Getting Started
-
Most people who come to First are completely new to Pilates, so you’re in good company.
We recommend starting with one of our introductory offers, where you’ll learn the fundamentals, become familiar with the equipment and build confidence before deciding what’s next.
If you’re unsure which option is right for you, get in touch. We’d be happy to help.
-
Often, yes. Every person is different, so we’ll always take your history, goals and current symptoms into account before recommending the best place to start.
If you’re currently experiencing pain, recovering from an injury or have a complex condition, we may recommend beginning with a physiotherapy consultation before joining classes.
-
Not at all. You don’t need to be fit, flexible or have any previous experience. Our classes are designed to meet you where you’re at and help you build strength, mobility and confidence over time.
-
Absolutely. Many of our clients are in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond. Whether you’re returning to exercise after years away or simply wanting to move better, we’ll help you progress at a pace that’s right for you.
-
Our focus isn’t just on getting through a workout, it’s on helping you move well.
We keep our classes small, prioritise quality instruction and take the time to explain what you’re doing and why. With physiotherapy available within the studio, we’re also able to provide additional support when needed.
-
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.
Grip socks are required for all Pilates sessions for hygiene and safety. If you don’t have a pair, they’re available to purchase at the studio.
We also recommend bringing a water bottle.
Classes
-
Our Group Reformer classes are intentionally kept small, so you’ll still receive plenty of guidance and support throughout your session.
Semi-Private Pilates offers an even more personalised experience, while Private Pilates and Physiotherapy are one-on-one.
-
We start promptly and the warm-up is essential for injury prevention.
If you arrive more than 10 minutes late, we may not be able to let you join, as we want to ensure everyone’s safety and minimise disruption to the session.
-
Not at all. Everyone starts somewhere, and many of our members felt exactly the same before their first class.
Our instructors will guide you through the session and offer modifications where needed, so you can work at your own pace.
-
Reformer 1 is ideal for beginners and those wanting to build strong foundations.
Reformer 2 is designed for clients who are confident with the fundamentals and ready for more challenge.
Semi-Private Pilates offers a more personalised experience in a small group of up to three people, with individual programming tailored to your goals.
-
Yes. Your membership can be used across eligible Group Reformer classes. If you’re unsure which classes are suitable for you, just ask - we’re happy to help.
-
We recommend all beginners start with Reformer 1.
Once you’ve built confidence and your instructor feels you’re ready, you’re welcome to progress into Reformer 2 classes.
-
In many cases, yes. We recommend contacting us before booking so we can discuss your stage of pregnancy and determine the most appropriate starting point. Depending on your circumstances, we may recommend a Private Pilates or Physiotherapy consultation first.

Physiotherapy
-
We do not bulk bill.
If you have private health insurance with extras cover that includes physiotherapy, you may be able to claim on the spot using HICAPS, depending on your level of cover.
If you’re eligible for a Chronic Condition Management (formerly Chronic Disease Management) Plan from your GP, you may also be able to use this towards your physiotherapy treatment. Please speak with your GP to see if you’re eligible.
-
Physiotherapy focuses on assessing, diagnosing and treating pain, injury and movement concerns.
Private Pilates focuses on exercise, movement education and building strength. If needed, the two can work together as part of your care.
-
If you’re currently experiencing pain, recovering from an injury or aren’t sure what’s causing your symptoms, we recommend booking a physiotherapy consultation first.
If you’re simply looking to become stronger, move better or improve your fitness, Pilates is often a great place to start.
If you’re unsure, just contact us, we’ll help point you in the right direction.
